Obama: Guantanamo undermines America's national security, needs to be closed

President Obama is sending lawmakers a plan to close the controversial Guantanamo Bay prison and transfer between 30 and 60 detainees to a prison in the U.S., senior administration officials said this morning.

Though the White House is not hopeful that Republican leaders in Congress will seriously consider the proposal, Obama is making a personal pitch for the plan.

"For many years, it has been clear the detention facility at Guantanamo Bay does not enhance our security - it undermines it," he said in a statement from the White House on Tuesday morning.
