The Homicide Report tracks all deaths at the hand of another in Los Angeles County. The report is based on findings by the coroner’s office. Here is a look at the 2011 statistics.

*Homicide victims under the age of 1 are included in the "unknown" category.

**Deferred deaths: In some cases, the Los Angeles County coroner lists a death as a homicide but then defers final judgment, pending further tests or investigation. Such a death may later be ruled a homicide, or be found to have been suicide, or the result of natural causes or an accident. The results usually are available within six to eight weeks. The Homicide Report has followed up with the coroner's office on about 25 deferred cases.
