Construction crews have just 53 hours to demolish the north half of the Mulholland Drive bridge in the Sepulveda Pass over the 405 Freeway on Sept. 28-Oct 1. The southern side of the bridge, which was knocked down in July of last year during the first Carmageddon freeway closure, has since been replaced with a new bridge.

Preparation
Crews create access points throughout the top of the bridge to remove leftover wood forms from cavities.
Protecting the 405
Trucks deposit 1,200 cubic yards of dirt under the bridge to protect the freeway from falling debris.
Deconstruction
Four excavator-mounted jackhammers chip away at the concrete in the middle and move slowly outward.
Rebar
As the rams are working, technicians with cutting torches remove rebar for recycling.
Cleanup
Front-end loaders place dirt and concrete into trucks for transport to a nearby storage site.
