A new look at the brain

By making a brain transparent, Stanford University scientists have been able to highlight specific features using a optical microscope.

Fatty lipids surrounding each cell obscure the view.

A mesh gel holds the cell structure in place so the fat can be removed.

The brain becomes transparent to light once the fat is cleared away.
