Jack English’s cabin is in a remote valley in the Ventana Wilderness. At an elevation of 3,300 feet, the valley lies amid a succession of ridges and gorges west of the Salinas Valley and east of Big Sur. Jack always wanted to live here, and in 1975, he, his brother and their wives put in the winning bid for five acres that were being auctioned. They built their cabin using local material – wood and stone – and brought in other supplies by foot and with horses.
