Yosemite of the future?

A plan to protect the Merced River in Yosemite National Park could close some visitor amenities, alter several recreational facilities and reroute traffic. Here’s a look at what could happen in Yosemite Valley:

Remove and relocate campsites.

El Portal

Add parking area; remove or relocate housing at Abbieville and Trailer Village.

Yosemite Valley

1. El Capitan Meadow: Remove informal trails, add fencing, boardwalk and viewing platforms.

2. Construct new parking lot.

3. Valley Loop Trail: Reroute part of trail, add boardwalks.

4. Construct new campground east of El Capitan Picnic Area.

5. Yosemite Falls intersection: Construct pedestrian underpass.

6. Yosemite Lodge: Remove post office, swimming pool, bike rentals, snack stand and employee housing.

7. Housekeeping Camp: Remove 34 lodging units and grocery store. Restore an acre of riparian ecosystem.

8. New campground: restore 36 acres of flood plain.

9. Ahwahnee: Remove Sugar Pine Bridge; reroute trail, add trail, add new bridge.

10. Curry Village: Remove ice rink; add lodging and parking.
