A resident captured what happened next on tape: several LAPD officers dealt more than 50 blows to King while he was handcuffed on the ground. When the officers were acquitted on April 29, 1992, riots broke out across Los Angeles.

</title><link>http://graphics.latimes.com/usmap-state-poverty-rate/</link><description>High joblessness and the weak economic recovery pushed the ranks of the poor in the U.S. to 46.2 million in 2010 -- the fourth straight increase and the largest number of people living in poverty since record-keeping began 52 years ago, the Census Bureau reported Tuesday.

</title><link>http://graphics.latimes.com/usmap-obama-state-approval/</link><description>Despite his low ratings nationally, President Obama still has 16 states (including California) and the District of Columbia whose 215 electoral votes he can probably count on carrying in 2012. An additional 22 states with 168 electoral votes are almost certainly out of reach. The election likely will be fought out in the dozen states in between.

Roll over a state to see Obama&amp;#39;s average approval rating from Jan. 2 through June 30, 2011.

The state&amp;#39;s unemployment rate rose slightly, to 11.8%, from 11.7% the month before, the Bureau of Labor Statistics said Friday morning.

In contrast to California, the nation added just 18,000 net new jobs in June, and its unemployment rate rose for the third straight month, to 9.2%. But Friday&amp;#39;s job figures showed that some of the hardest-hit states performed well in June. Michigan added 18,000 jobs, and Minnesota, which was until recently embroiled in state budget issues, added 13,200.
